The Company has assembled a team of industry experts who are recognized leaders in their professions. Management is backed by a committed board of directors, expert advisors and consultants, providing a broad range of technical, financial and bioenergy industry skills to lead the Company through the development stage to production of biodiesel and expansion within the industry.
Senior Management
The senior management team consists of :
Doug is responsible for the overall strategic planning, business development, project viability, corporate finance, legal affairs and management of the Company. He is a Company founder, acting as an advisor to Ian Thomson since 2002, prior to full time engagement with Canadian Bioenergy in May 2005. Doug has a range of senior management and board governance experience in public, private and not-for-profit enterprises.
Doug is a Director of the Canola Council of Canada and a board member of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association. He is a registered Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.), a Fellow of the Geological Association of Canada (FGAC), and a LEED Accredited Professional (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Prior to Canadian Bioenergy, Doug founded and was the former President of TelSoft Mobile Data Inc. (now MDSI Mobile Data Solutions Inc.), which, through strategic alliances and acquisitions, became a global leader in its industry.
Ian oversees the Company's biodiesel fuel operations business and works closely with the Alberta agricultural community in advance of the company's proposed production facility in Sturgeon County. Ian is a Company founder and, from September 2002, led the business through its startup market development phase to the incorporation of the Company. Ian is a pioneer and leader in the Canadian biodiesel industry, working, in 2004, to exempt biodiesel blends in BC from road fuel taxes and assisting with the establishment of the BC BioFleet program.
Ian has 15 years of strategic consulting experience to organizations such as Cargill, Chevron, Duke Energy, PetroCanada, and United Technologies. Ian is a former Chartered Accountant and is the current President of the Alberta Biodiesel Association.
Adam is responsible for the Company's biodiesel supply, distribution and sales operations. Adam is a Company founder and formerly a member of the Sustainable Communities Group at the Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development and was also a research analyst with the Sustainable Development Research Initiative at University of British Columbia's Institute for Resources Environment and Sustainability (SDRI). At SDRI, Adam focused on research into bioenergy, biofuels and bio-waste management techno-economics, and related policy, regulations and markets. Adam has been engaged on numerous sustainability research and consulting projects, with organizations including BC Hydro, Natural Resources Canada and the National Research Council Canada. Adam sits on the executive board of the BC BioProducts Association.
Doug heads up the Company's finance, tax, administration, and information technology management functions. Doug is primarily responsible for financial modeling, financial oversight, tax planning and corporate finance. Doug joined the Company's founder's team in January 2006. He is a Chartered Accountant, with 26 years of business experience ranging from start-up companies to senior financial executive roles of publicly listed companies. Doug has served in executive positions with four high growth companies, prior to which he had 12 years of client service experience with KPMG, LLP.
Barb is responsible for the Company’s petroleum industry and customer alliance programs, integrating supply-side agricultural alliances, and articulating Canadian Bioenergy's high quality canola-biodiesel brand promise.
Barb joined Canadian Bioenergy after serving five years as President of the Canola Council of Canada. Previously she held executive positions within Cargill Limited, the Government of Saskatchewan, and Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association.
Stewart is responsible for the Company's commercial development activity including the introduction of new and improved product offerings. Stewart has a PhD in Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of Alberta and an MBA in Entrepreneurship and Venture Development from the University of Calgary.
Prior to joining Canadian Bioenergy, Stewart consulted to the plant biotechnology industry and government funding agencies on the commercial utility and processing of crops with new traits. Stewart has experience as an oilseed breeder with AAFC Saskatoon Research Station and as an executive in canola processing with United Oilseeds in Lloydminster (now ADM) and Canbra Foods in Lethbridge.
Board of Directors
The board of directors is comprised of three management representatives, Doug Hooper, Ian Thomson and Adam Reid Levine, and two independent members. Doug Hooper is board Chair and Doug Keast holds the office of Corporate Secretary. Additional board members are expected to be invited to join the board as the Company expands its operations and candidates are nominated that will provide significant value to the Company's initiatives. Dr. Dowlatabadi holds a Canada Research Chair in the Sustainable Development Research Institute and the Liu Centre for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia. He earned his PhD at the University of Cambridge (physics) and has been a researcher for over 20 years in the areas of energy, environment and public health. He is the author of over 100 peer reviewed publications and the founding editor of Integrated Assessment, associate editor of Climate Policy, and on the editorial board of Environmental Modeling and Assessment.
Ross has experience in urban planning, land development and a wide range of financial and business activities. Ross was the managing director of La Costa Ranch project in California, a 3,000-acre mixed-use land development project. Currently, Ross is president of Clandonald Holdings Ltd., a private securities investment company. He is also the owner of Nova Capital Ltd., a private equity investment company active in renewable energy projects and real estate development.
Advisory Board
Canadian Bioenergy has engaged advisors to assist with technical and operations expertise in renewable fuels and energy, bioenergy technology, distribution, climate change policy, finance, marketing, land development, and diesel fleet technology.
